your thoughts on the learning references Empty your thoughts on the learning references

Mybe its me, but does any one else think that the references in the books is a little bit off putting?

I.E. quotes from shakespear and T.S. Elliot for example

i'm not knocking it but this being the foundation for ITC i can not see the relevance, and if analagies are being used would it not be better if they were computer related.

i can tell (or assume) that the author of these books is very passionate about arts, history and all things fluffy and cute, and that he/she thinks that every body feels the same way, or shares the same interests, i can honestly say i have never read a book for fun in my entire life and have never felt the need too, so i may be missing something, but i have read an awfull amount of learning material which increases my knowledge but never fictional only fact.

My mate and his wife are both school teachers with Ba (hons) and they keep trying to give me books to read, and they say give it a try its great, but i just can't seem to share the inthusiasm, to me reading means study, study means qualifications, qualifications mean money, money means security, so reading without the financial benefit is not worth the effort.

is it me?
should i be missing all the fluffy stuff?
does anyone share my thoughts i'd love to know?
does any one think i am talking through my arse? (leaving myself wide open there)

please share your thoughts here
Many thanks

Oh Dean Poor poor Dean, talking out your arse and leaving yourself wide open there......did you really mean to put all that in one sentence......

Books are definitely to gain knowledge, whether it be fiction or science fiction autobiography or crime, there is also knowledge to be gained from them ,but not everyone is going to be a great reader or see any benefit from it, it would be a boring place if we all had the same opinion and did all the same things, I understand your point on the different extra's to read in the book, but I feel it is just information another way of trying to express something to us.

If you want to skip the fluffy parts, then you will do, its not worth asking whether you should or not it is only you that can decide whether you want to skip over information, and what can it do to read it just arm you with information you may not of known previously????

HA HA HAA i knew that would get me in trouble!!!

what i mean is i'm 36 years old and have been an mechanical engineer for 20 years with too many qualification in that field to show my ignorance to learning, i am very analytical and logical and i have never feld the need to recite shakespear to an engine in order to design, rebuild of repair its self and i don't think learning shakspear will help me network an office together or preventing a computer system crashing

what i was saying is that the referencing could be a little more relevent to the study material

i will read everything and try to take on board all study material because i believe they will carry a large part of understanding what this learning experience is about, i am self confessed a kinesthetic learner and if can't see the logic and practical reason in spending time in deap thought (which shakspear does) i will get board easily and may miss something important due to drifting off into a fluffy haze rather concentratng on the facts

although you have a very valid point and thanks for replying

Kind regards
Dean

I have found my pop up frog does my nut in also especially when trying to read something and all you see is this frog, I will look for something else to replace it, although I can not use the signature I use on the forums... But I am sure I will find something appropriate...

I find I am more logical and see purpose for things and put things into an order that I feel is more suited to a situation, I certainly see your point and understand that no amount of reading Shakespeare is going to allow you to fix a computer or put together a HTML page, I am sure also I have skipped and speed read alot of the added information, knowing that as I am so far ahead I have to come back to certain books and exercises when others are there and things need discussing, but I am a great note taking.....

So what do you think would be more relevant? do you have any suggestions or had you not thought that far ahead, maybe you can think of suggestions and then we can get into a debate about that......I would enjoy that I think as I like arguing.......hahahahha sorry not really, I am a woman but I don't really want to start arguements.!!!

I will now go in search of a new signature.....

Interesting little debate,

thought it quite ironic, dean, that you "have a go" at quotes in text and then have one in your signature.

Its each to their own on these debates.

In my opinion, using classic literature and quaotes to enhance a logical learning point works quite well, and face it one paragraph or sentence does not constitute reading war and peace Very Happy

You do not reading anything other than study material? Are you a robot? I could not imagine not having read any Terry Pratchet, the man is a comic genius.

As for general reading, you say you are very logical and analytical, so am I, but maybe you are missing one portion of analytical behaviour, to analyse.
The books written by people are a great insight into the mind itself let alone anything else, one of the most challenging things to analyse is the human, so far you have probably merely been analysing mechanics and maths functions etc. These while sometimes difficult, compare so weakly with what goes on in a human mind.

I love anything that can be easily quantified and put onto paper it makes the world feel very nice and square (sorry for analogy dont really know how to describe this). However I also love the mystery of life, and part of life is the outcomes created by it.

Next time you think, hmm why should I read this book it will not gain me income, I challenge you instead to think and what was going on in the man/woman that created it. What are you living for my friend? Money or life? Learning is one of the greatest enjoyments you can have in this life, please go and find "The Light Fantastic" and "The Colour of Magic" by Terry Pratchett and try and if you are not ammused .... you really must be a robot (p.s. take it with a pinch of salt and know almost every line has 2 meanings)

Don't get me wrong but i also love a good debate, but on a scale of interest from 1 - 10, Shakespear and Einstein are tipping both ends of this scale respectivly, even though reading about Einstein will not help me fix a computer or design a html page, i resect what he has done and achived for science.

As for coming up with alterative referencing thats a very good question, my first thought would be everybody favorite person Bill Gates and the develpement of windows or perhaps or the creators of babbage, apple, google, or the military even? as that as we all know is where all this technology came from, my point is, make it more relevant to the ICT course or at least science, not arts as we all know they are two completly different fields and i have no interest in arts at all except entertainment and music i suppose but thats just recreational not study

I'm not 'having a go' i am just sharing my thoughts and ideas to prevoke a discussion this is something i have always felt, maybe i am a robot maybe i should contemplate my goal in life to be a slug catcher (sorry for the pun)

throughout my child hood right up to today i have always been musical, i suppose the time in your lives where you would have picked up a book and read for hours, i was playing my guitar and keyboards (i was going to say 'playing with my organ' but thats a whole different debate LOL), i have been in several bands starting with the keyboard when i was at school untill i picked up a guitar one day not long after and never played the keyboard since, the second and third band i was in i played lead guitar, and the band which i done best in i played bass guitar and i was out gigging 2-4 times every week in south wales for 4 and a half years, we were top of the bill at the Merthyr Music festival and played at the freemasons newyears bash at Cyfartha castle amoungst other things so all my spare time was filled with music so i never had the time to read,

maybe a big part af my life has been missed, by understanding the obvious pleasure that reading has given all of you, but you don't miss what you never had, and i only read to gain knowledge and nothing else

and i suppose thats what makes me different.

thanks for all your comments, this is great keep em coming wooo hoooo

Kind regards
Dean
